There are foods that bring people together. That make you smile just by hearing their name. Pizza is one of them. A thin (or sometimes fluffy) dough, ripe tomatoes, melted cheese… and you’ve got magic on the table. It doesn’t matter if you’re in Italy, Valencia or anywhere else in the world: there’s always someone ready to say, “I’ll have a slice too.” When is World Pizza Day ? Why was this event created?

World Pizza Day: more than a date on the calendar

Every 9th of February, the world celebrates World Pizza Day. An international tribute to this Italian icon loved everywhere. But to be honest, at La Forcola we don’t wait for that date. For us, pizza is celebrated every single day. What really matters is not the calendar, but the tradition, the quality ingredients, and above all, the love with which it’s prepared.

From the streets of Naples to worldwide fame

The history of pizza begins in the humble streets of Naples in the 17th century. It was the people’s food: flatbread, tomato, a few herbs, simple, affordable, delicious. The turning point came in 1889, when Queen Margherita of Savoy visited Naples. Pizzaiolo Raffaele Esposito created a pizza in her honour, using the colours of the Italian flag: red tomato, white mozzarella, and green basil. The queen loved it. And just like that, the legendary Margherita was born, bringing pizza to the spotlight.

Since then, pizza has travelled the globe, reinvented itself in countless ways, but if you taste an authentic one, the Neapolitan spirit is still there.

Fun facts about pizza you might not know

Pizza hides some curious stories that make for great table conversation:

  • In 2012, in Rome, chefs baked the world’s largest pizza: 1,261 square metres! Imagine sharing that out.
  • The world’s most popular topping is still pepperoni. But here at La Forcola, our customers usually prefer the classic Margherita or the Prosciutto Funghi.
  • Yes, pizza is round but the box is square. The reason? In the 1960s, square boxes were cheaper to produce and easier to stack.
  • In 2017, the art of Neapolitan “pizzaioli” was declared UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage, recognising not just the dish, but the tradition and craftsmanship behind it.

These small details remind us that pizza is not just food, it’s culture, tradition, and endless creativity.

Our pizza: made with patience and passion

At La Forcola, years of kneading and experimenting have taught us that patience makes the difference. Our dough rests just the right amount of time to be light and easy to digest. We use carefully selected tomatoes, fresh mozzarella, and that extra touch of love.

Then it goes into our volcanic stone oven, which recreates the heat of a wood-fired oven while keeping a perfect temperature at all times. The result? A crispy, golden crust on the outside, soft and airy on the inside. The kind of flavour that makes you crave another bite.

For us, every pizza is a tribute. And World Pizza Day is just a reminder of why we love what we do.

The forgotten cousin: Calzone

Talking about pizza means talking about calzone too. Some describe it as a “folded pizza,” but anyone who tries it knows it has its own personality. The filling, sealed inside the dough, releases an irresistible aroma when opened. If you’re a pizza lover, you should definitely give it a chance, we even dedicated a full article to it.

At La Forcola, every day is World Pizza Day

At the end of the day, you don’t need to wait until February 9th. Pizza deserves to be celebrated always. Because it’s history, flavour, and togetherness. At La Forcola, every day is a party in honour of this Italian dish that conquered the world.

So come visit us at our Italian restaurant in Valencia. Order your favourite pizza, pair it with a good wine, and celebrate with us.
